A drain or toilet is overflowing
Water backing up out of a floor drain, a sink or a toilet.
Do this now
- Stop using water everywhere in the house. One flush upstairs makes the overflow downstairs worse.
- If it is sewage, keep children and bare feet well away from it, and open a window.
- Bail the standing water into a bucket so it stops spreading, and put towels at the doorway.
- Check whether other drains in the house are slow as well. If they all are, the blockage is in the main line, and that changes the job.

Whatever you do, don't
- Do not pour drain acid down it. It burns skin, it damages PVC pipe, and it makes the drain genuinely dangerous for whoever has to open it afterwards.
- Do not pour boiling water into a PVC line.
- Do not force a rod down a toilet. Porcelain cracks, and then it is a much bigger bill.
Then what?
